Brooklyn, NY – Saturday, November 2, 2019: Atlantis Cricket Club – NY tonight honored former Trinidad & Tobago and Windies Test wicketkeeper-batsman Deryck Murray, at its 53rd annual awards presentation dinner.
The diminutive Mr. Dependable Deryck Lance Murray was made an Honorary Life Member of the New York-based cricket club, alongside Jacklyn Ann Lloyd, sister of former Guyana and Windies Test captain Clive Lloyd, who along with legendary Windies batsman Joe Solomon, was in attendance at the gala dinner. Jacklyn Lloyd previously served as Secretary of Atlantis Cricket Club – NY and was made an Honorary Life Member at the dinner held at Glen Terrace in Brooklyn.
Addressing the more than 200 dinner guests, Deryck Murray reminisced about playing alongside Clive Lloyd in the 1975 Cricket World Cup and the Packer World Series in 1978 and 1979 and shared several personal anecdotes of the cricketing era when the West Indies dominated world cricket. Trinidad & Tobago’s current New York Consul General J. Andre Laveau toasted Deryck Murray, who was recently appointed that nation’s High Commissioner to Jamaica. Mr. Laveau was accompanied by his beautiful wife, Mrs. Laveau.
Deryck Murray is no stranger to New York. As a member of the Trinidad & Tobago diplomatic corps, he served as that country’s representative to the United Nations from 1981 to 1988. Having made his debut for the West Indies in 1963, Murray would go on to wear the maroon colors of the Windies in 62 Test matches. His debut for the West Indies was a surprise to many because he had not played a significant amount of first-class cricket before being selected to the Windies squad’s tour of England in 1963 at the age of 18. He seized the opportunity and made a career of being extremely dependable behind and in front of the sticks.
His former captain Clive Lloyd took the opportunity to toast his former vice-captain Deryck Murray, remarking that Murray brought a tremendous amount of discipline and courage to the West Indies cricket teams of the late 70s, and someone he could always turn to when making an informed decision as captain.
Deryck Murray assisted in presenting the 2019 season outstanding performance awards to Atlantis players. Those receiving awards were MVP Randall Wilson, who also captured several other batting awards. Trinson Carmichael was the recipient of the club’s Most Promising Player award, while Harry Thompson and Winston Forrester copped the Spirit of Cricket and Most Disciplined Player awards, respectively.
